GEMS Fall Session Newsletter
Girls Equity Movement (GEMS) aims to catalyze change by equipping young women with the networking, training, and leadership skills they need to change the world. Our entrepreneurship training program provides career mentorship, exposure to technology & coding, life coaching and more.
This past year we welcomed our fourth cohort of GEMS for the 2022-23 academic year. Twenty amazing GEMS were recruited from Bay Area high-schools in Oakland, Alameda, Hayward, Vallejo, San Leandro, and beyond. During the summer and fall, GEMS engaged in professional development activities, community events, and social emotional learning experiences. Guest speakers joined us from Airtable, the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM), NASA, and a number of small businesses from around the Bay Area.
Girls Equity Movement Back To School Bowl
To kick off the 2022-2023 school year, we hosted our Back to School Bowling Event at Bowlero. GEMS received new shoes, backpacks, and school supplies while playing arcade games and a few rounds of bowling.
For the Fall semester, we incorporated a new asynchronous entrepreneurial learning platform called Mindset & Milestones by Diondraya Taylor. GEMS learned the foundations of the entrepreneurial mindset and began to outline their business ideas. Additionally, GEMS had the opportunity to attend community events hosted by the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, The Hidden Genius Project, California Black Women’s Collective, UC Davis, Black Women Organized for Political Action (BWOPA), East Oakland Youth Development Center (EOYDC).
We ended the year with our Fall Celebration where GEMS presented their business ideas, enjoyed catered food from Olive Garden, and received achievement awards.
